Multimedia

, synthetic creative direction, design / staging of a multimedia work as a unified, total work of art.

german Gesamtkunstwerk — "unified, total work of art", is the concept of synthesizing different types of art (music, theater, painting, architecture, literature) into one artistic whole, which provides a harmonious, complete perception. The term was introduced by the composer Richard Wagner in the 19th century to describe the ideal musical theater.

Until recently, the division between design and staging was as follows: design creates, for example, characters, props and environments; at the same time, staging decides where they stand and how the light falls on them to tell the story. However, in multimedia production, there is a steady convergence of design and staging, for example:
    • Game design creates a “level” but uses staging (light cues, sound) to “guide” the player to the goal without taking away their control
    • In animation design, these two concepts truly merge; the graphic design is responsible for its movement, which is actually a form of temporal staging
    • Virtual production, in particular in Unreal Engine, involves the simultaneous design of scenery and filming in digital space

Multimedia, as a creative direction, is presented in the format of a multimedia show, a performance that combines synchronized lighting, music, video, special effects and live performance. It can be interactive, allowing performers and sometimes viewers to interact with multimedia content.
A multimedia show can take place as a self-sufficient artistic event, as well as as part of a mass event. Can scale from a chamber production to a grandiose show. Not only specially built scenes and objects can be used, but also existing architecture and landscape elements. In addition, using 3D mapping technology, scenery can be formed and changed during the action
